Rayburn, Morgan & Crandall host Christmastime Monitor ’67

Christmastime greetings, Monitor fans!  Below, near the bottom of this page and with red headlines like this, you will find several delightful hours of Gene Rayburn, Henry Morgan & Brad Crandall hosting Christmastime Monitor ’67.  We hope these cheerful hours will help put you into the holiday spirit, as they did for us.  

Below, in chronological order, you’ll find about 115 hours of Monitor that aired from July through December of 1967, hosted by (in alphabetical order) Jim Backus, Brad Crandall, Curt Gowdy, Jack Haskell, Richard Hayes, Bill Mazer, Ed McMahon, Henry Morgan, Bert Parks, Gene Rayburn and Ted Steele.

You’ll find that most of these hours have a blue headline, like this.  All of these “blue hours” were recorded by “super” Monitor fan Warren Gerbe off WNBC Radio.  His recordings made their way to George Miller, who, along with Louis Castaing, have kindly made them available.  We cannot thank them enough.

Jayne Mansfield’s last interview — Monitor ’67 — July 1

Time: about four minutes

This is from Saturday afternoon Monitor hosted by Ed McMahon on July 1, 1967 — the final interview ever done by Hollywood actress Jayne Mansfield.  It was recorded three nights earlier, right after her performance in Biloxi, Mississippi.  Hours after this interview, she died in a car accident.

Gene’s back, hosting this hour of Saturday morning Monitor from 11 a.m. to noon ET on July 8, 1967.  It begins with NBC Monitor News on the Hour, and moves on to feature Ted Webbe’s Sport of Speed,” an interview with a female pilot who had just retraced Amelia Earhart’s last flight, Lindsey Nelson’s “Monitor Goes Fishing” report, and a comedy skit by the great Mike Nichols and Elaine May.

Bill Mazer hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 —  July 8

Time: one hour

Here is the first of all three hours of  Saturday afternoon Monitor hosted by WNBC Radio sports-talk host Bill Mazer, filling in for regular host Ed McMahon on July 8, 1967.  In this hour — from 3 to 4 p.m. ET — you’ll hear a Joe Garagiola sports report, an interview with composer Henry Mancini, an interview with a weatherman who had visited the Arctic, and a fine comedy routine by Mike Nichols and Elaine May.

Bill Mazer hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — July 8

Time: one hour

Bill returns with this second hour of Saturday afternoon Monitor from 4 to 5 p.m. on July 8, 1967.  It begins with NBC Monitor News on the hour, and then features a Leonard Probst report on a burlesque revival, a report on the Powder Puff Derby, a feature by Dr. Joyce Brothers, and a report on mountain climbing in Milwaukee.

Bill Mazer hosts Monitor ’67, part 3 — July 8

Time: one hour

This third and final hour of Saturday afternoon Monitor on July 8, 1967, from 5 to 6 p.m.  ET, opens with NBC Monitor News on the Hour.  Then Bill Mazer presides over an interview with actress Carol Lawrence before he fills in for Mel  Allen and reads the Saturday afternoon sports update.  Then you’ll hearing Lindsey Nelson’s “Monitor Goes Fishing” report and a “Ring Around the World” report.

Ted Steele hosts Monitor ’67 — July 8

Ted hosts this half-hour of Saturday night Monitor from 10 to 10:30 p.m. ET on July 8, 1967, featuring a Joe Garagiola sports report and an interview with an English criminal who also was a World War II spy.

Henry Morgan hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — July 9

Henry hosts this half-hour of Sunday afternoon Monitor from 3:30 to 4 p.m. ET on July 9, 1967, featuring a Joe Garagiola sports report; an interview with well-known doctor Walter Alvarez; and an interview with an aviator set to embark on a flight around the world.

Henry Morgan hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — July 9

Time: one hour

Henry starts this delightful hour of Sunday afternoon Monitor from 4 to 5 p.m. ET on July 9, 1967, by interviewing Eve Brown, who had just written a history of NYC’s Plaza Hotel.  Then there’s Peter Hackes, reporting on the American hesitation to adopt the metric system (and, more than five decades later, we still haven’t); Lindsey Nelson’s “Monitor Goes Fishing,” which features Gene Rayburn interviewing actor Hugh O’Brian; and Dr. Joyce Brothers, with advice for young men trying to impress young women.

Brad Crandall hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — July 9

Time: one hour

Brad — a WNBC Radio talk-show host who also hosted NBC’s Sunday night Monitor for years — handles this excellent hour from 7-8 p.m. ET on July 9, 1967.  For starters, he  interviews former FBI agent Norm Ollestad about his new book, “Inside the FBI.”  Then there’s a live report from the United Nations on the most recent unpleasantness in the Middle East; Mel Allen’s live Sunday night sports report; a funny “Monitor on Stage” skit by comedian Bob Newhart; and an interview with Eugene Ormandy, the conductor of the Philadelphia Symphony.

Brad Crandall hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — July 9

Brad’s back with the second hour of Sunday night Monitor from 8-9 p.m. ET on July 9, 1967.  You’ll hear an interview with Helen Forrest, a legendary singer from the Big Band Era; Joe Garagiola’s sports report; an interview with a member of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle group; and Ted Webbe’s “Sport of Speed.”

Ed McMahon hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — July 15

This is an excellent hour, hosted by Mr. McMahon on Saturday afternoon, July 15, 1967, from 3 to 4 p.m. ET.  Ed interviews pianist Ruben Mitchell,  there’s a Monitor sports Olympics preview, and there’s a really nicely produced feature on the Delta Queen in Nashville, along with another fine comedy skit by the great Mike Nichols and Elaine May.  Also, note the Coppertone commercial — voiced by actress Sharon Tate.

Ed McMahon hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — July 15

Ed hosts this half-hour from Saturday, July 15, 1967, from 4 to 4:30 p.m. ET.  It opens with NBC Monitor News on the Hour, and features an interview with a dog expert and a Monitor sports report.

Brad Crandall hosts Monitor ’67 — July 16

Time: one hour

Brad hosts this hour of Sunday night Monitor from 8 to 9 p.m. ET on July 16, 1967.  It features an interview with former Minnesota governor (and frequent failed presidential candidate) Harold Stassen, a Joe Garagiola sports report, an Al Capp commentary, and an interview with a Stanford expert about the possibility of a future cashless society (yes, he was somewhat ahead of his time).

In this half-hour of Saturday morning Monitor that aired from 11:30 to noon E.T. on July 22, 1967, Gene conducts a live interview with the mayor of Winneconne, Wisconsin — a town that had announced it was seceding from the state (yes, really).  There’s also a “Ring Around the World” report and a Monitor tip.

Yes, we have all three hours of Saturday afternoon Monitor for July 22, 1967, hosted by Ed McMahon.  In this first hour — from 3 to 4 p.m. ET — you’ll hear an interview with comedian Bob Newhart;  a Joe Garagiola sports report; an interview with a guy who claims to have seen the Loch Ness Monster;  a Monitor tip; and Hugh Downs (who was then hosting the “Today” show on NBC-TV) interviewing NBC’s John Chancellor, who had just returned from covering the latest Middle East War and who would, in a few years, become anchor of “NBC Nightly News.”  Yes, Monitor had big names, didn’t it?

Ed’s back with this second hour of  Saturday afternoon Monitor from 4 to 5 p.m. ET on July 22, 1967.  It features a report on cattle rustling in Florida (yes, Florida), an Al Capp commentary, an interview with Mrs. Babe Ruth, and a comedy skit by the legendary Mike Nichols and Elaine May.

This third and final hour of Saturday afternoon Monitor — hosted by Ed McMahon on Saturday, July 22, 1967, from 5 to 6 p.m. ET — begins with NBC Monitor News on the Hour.  Then Ed takes it from there, first introducing an interview with a coin dealer who paid big money to get a certain dollar bill. You’ll hear Ed conduct a compelling live interview with an NBC reporter who had just witnessed the disruption of a Black Power conference in Newark, New Jersey.  The hour rounds out with a report from Moscow and with Mel Allen’s live Saturday afternoon sports update.

Brad hosts this hour of Sunday night Monitor from 9 to 10 p.m. ET on July 23, 1967.  You’ll hear an interview with Irving Zeidman, the author of “The American Burlesque Show”;  an interview about the Loch Ness monster; a report from a Black Power conference in Newark, New Jersey; and an interview with a student at the National Youth Science gathering.

Bill Mazer hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 –July 30

WNBC Radio sports-show host Bill Mazer filled in for regular Monitor Sunday afternoon host Henry Morgan on July 30, 1967.  This 3 to 4 p.m. ET hour features an interview with singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, a report from Vietnam, a report on a new Smithsonian exhibition, and a Joe Garagiola sports report.

Bill Mazer hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — July 30

Bill’s back with this second hour of Saturday afternoon Monitor from 4 to 5 p.m. ET on July 30, 1967.  You’ll hear an interview with the author of a book about education in the Soviet Union; baseball great Sandy Koufax interviewing another baseball great, Hank Aaron; tips on how to buy a used car; and Chet Huntley’s news analysis on America’s racial problems.

Brad presides over this hour of Sunday night Monitor from 8 to 9 p.m. ET on July 30, 1967, featuring an interview with bandleader Freddy Martin; a report from Detroit on recent rioting there and in Newark, New Jersey; a “Ring Around the World” report from Vietnam; and an interview with Patricia Peabody Roosevelt, the current (and 5th) wife of Elliott Roosevelt.  A fine hour — though the recording stopped early, so we do not hear “Sport of Speed.”

This hour — airing from 4-5 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 12, 1967 — starts with NBC Monitor News on the Hour and features an interview with Pat O’Brien; a Monitor tip; an Al Capp commentary; an update on efforts to rescue a 15-year-old boy who was trapped in a West Virginia well; and Monitor sports editor Len Dillon, interviewing Weeb Ewbank, the coach of the New York Jets.

Jim Backus hosts Monitor ’67, part 3 — Aug. 12

Time: a half-hour

Here’s Jim “Mr. Magoo” Backus, hosting Saturday afternoon Monitor from 5 to 5:30 p.m. ET on Aug. 20, 1967.  It opens with NBC Monitor News on the Hour, and then moves on with a “Monitor on Stage” comedy skit by Shelley Berman, a report on the rescue of a 15-year-old boy trapped in a West Virginia well, and a report on a tobacco auction.  And, yes, you’ll hear Jim’s “Magoo” voice.

Ed McMahon hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — Aug. 19

Time: one hour

Here’s Ed, back on Monitor on August 19, 1967, after taking the previous Saturday afternoon off and having Jim Backus fill in for him (above).  This 3 to 4 p.m. ET hour features an interview with actor Peter Lawford, a Joe Garagiola sports  report, Hugh Downs interviewing comedian Godfrey Cambridge, a comedy bit by Mike Nichols and Elaine May, and a Monitor tip.  In other words, this hour is loaded!

Ed McMahon hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — Aug. 19

Time: one hour

Ed hosts this hour from 4 to 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 19, 1967, featuring  NBC Monitor News on the Hour, an interview with actor Theodore Bikel, a Monitor tip, a Monitor sports report, and a  “Ring Around the World” report. But wait — there’s more!  Ed introduces himself — yes, himself — singing a song from his new album — and there’s also a report on a new private camping ground in Iowa.  A delightful hour!

Time: one hour

This fine hour, hosted by Ed from 5 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 1967, opens with NBC Monitor News on the Hour and features an interview with singer Frankie Laine; a commentary by Al Capp; a “Ring Around the World” report; and Mel Allen’s live Saturday afternoon sports update.

Curt Gowdy hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — Aug. 20

Time: one hour

That’s right — NBC-TV’s legendary sportscaster Curt Gowdy hosted this  segment of  Monitor from 2 to 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 20, 1967, filling in for regular host Henry Morgan. This fine hour features a report from Scotland on the Loch Ness monster, Dr. Joyce Brothers with a prescient look at the future use of computers, a Ring Around the World report from Vietnam and a report on a teenage driving competition. Curt hosted this Sunday afternoon Monitor from Radio Central in New York the day after he had broadcast NBC-TV’s Baseball Game of the Week from Boston.

Curt Gowdy hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 —  Aug. 20

Time:  one hour

We are delighted to have another hour of Mr. Gowdy hosting Sunday afternoon Monitor on August 20, 1967.  This 3 to 4 p.m. ET hour features a Sandy Koufax sports report, Frank Blair’s “Let’s Be Frank” report, a Joe Garagiola sports feature, a Monitor tip, and an interview with entertainer Pearl Bailey.  Delightful!

Curt Gowdy hosts Monitor ’67, part 3 —  Aug.  20

Curt Gowdy hosts Monitor ’67, part 4 — Aug. 20

Time: a half-hour

Here’s Curt, hosting the last half-hour of Sunday afternoon Monitor from 5:30 to 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 20, 1967.  You’ll hear a “Ring Around the World” report and a Monitor tip.  Unfortunately, the tape ran out before we could hear Mel Allen’s live Sunday afternoon sports update, but what we have here is good.

Brad Crandall hosts Monitor ’67 — Aug 20

Time: one hour

Brad emcees this hour of  Sunday night Monitor from 8 to 9 p.m. ET on August 20, 1967, and it’s a poignant hour.  It begins with an interview with early-day TV star Dagmar; followed by a commentary by Al Capp; and an interview with Father Joseph Kavanaugh, who had just written a book on the Catholic Church.  Then — Mel Allen announces that Ted Webbe — who had reported Monitor’s “Sport of Speed” for years — had died of a heart attack earlier in the week.  Mel’s eulogy for Ted is heart-felt and tear-inducing — after which he reports on that day’s auto racing results.  Brad Crandall follows with more words about Ted.

Gene Rayburn hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — Sept. 9

Gene presides over this half-hour of Saturday morning Monitor from 9 to 9:30 a.m. ET on the NBC Radio Network on Sept. 9, 1967 (it aired from noon to 12:30 on WNBC Radio in NYC).  It begins with NBC Monitor News on the Hour. Then you’ll  hear an interview with the ex-wife of boxing champ Cassius Clay (when he was known by that name) and an Al Capp commentary.

Ted performs double-duty on this half-hour of Saturday night Monitor from 8 to 8:30 p.m. ET  on Sept. 9, 1967.  Not only does he host — he fills in for Mel Allen with the live Saturday night sports update.  Then he presides over a Monitor on Stage performance by comedian Fannie Flagg and the second part of the interview with the ex-wife of boxer Cassius Clay, as he was known when they were married (the first part aired on Saturday morning Monitor).

Gene Rayburn hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — Sept. 16

Time: a half-hour

Here’s Gene, from 9:35 to 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, September 16, 1967, presiding over a Joe Garagiola sports report and conducting an interview with the new Miss America.  There’s also a Monitor tip, and Gene mentions that he’ll be sitting in for Johnny Carson as host of “Tonight” the following week.

Richard Hayes hosts Monitor ’67, part 1 — Sept. 23

Singer-actor Richard Hayes hosted this segment of Saturday night Monitor from 9:30 to 10 p.m. ET on September 23, 1967.  Filling in for vacationing host Ted Steele, Hayes presided over this delightful half-hour that begins with Monitor’s music “fill” from :30 to :35.  Then you’ll hear NBC sportscaster Kyle Rote interviewing NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, followed by Hayes’ interview with calypso musician Hubert Smith.

Richard Hayes hosts Monitor ’67, part 2 — Sept. 23

Here’s more of Richard Hayes, filling in for vacationing Ted Steele on Saturday night Monitor from 10 to 10:30 p.m. ET on September 23, 1967.  Featured are an interview with actress Dorothy Provine and a “Monitor on Stage” performance by the great comedian Bob Newhart.

Here’s Brad, hosting Monitor on Sunday night, Dec. 24, 1967, from 7 to 7:30 p.m. ET.  Yes, it’s Christmas Eve — and you’ll hear Joe Garagiola’s delightful takeoff on the immortal poem “The Night Before Christmas”; and Brad’s live interview with an NBC reporter in Jerusalem.  And be sure to stay until the end when Brad will say:  “This is NBC — the Night Before Christmas.”  It was the only night of the year NBC could say that, of course — and I remember hearing it as a youngster and being thrilled.  Yes, I loved broadcasting as a kid.

Henry’s here on this last day of December 1967, hosting Monitor from 4:30 to 5 p.m. ET.  It begins with Monitor’s five-minute music fill (that stations could carry at the half-hour or use for local news), followed by a report on an upcoming heavyweight boxing championship fight; an Al Capp commentary; and NBC’s Ben Grauer, interviewing bandleader Guy Lombardo.  It being New Year’s Eve, both Ben and Guy would show up a few hours later for NBC Radio’s Annual New Year’s Eve All-Star Parade of Bands.
