I was a kid growing up on Long Island (Glen Cove), New York, and was always attracted to New York radio. I believe I did tune into the first Monitor broadcast on a Friday night as I recall.
I distinctly remember listening to Monitor on Saturday mornings with Mel Allen and on one show, they played a recording of a race run the previous night at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. I can still hear it in my mind. And I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever heard. It opened up the world of radio to me.
Eventually, I made radio my career. It’s not too far of a stretch to say that Monitor broadcast was one of the things that inspired me on the path to broadcasting.
